Marian DeWane taught AP Chemistry and AP Environmental Science at Centennial High School in Boise, Idaho. She is currently teaching the on-line introductory course at UCLA. Marian has been participating in the AP Chemistry readings as a reader, table leader, and question leader. She has been trained by the College Board and is an endorsed AP Chemistry workshop consultant. She is currently serving as an AP Chemistry Test Question Writer. She is the National Leadership Trainer for AP® Chemistry and Vertical Teams in Science. Marian authored the Pre-AP®Vertical teams in Science Workshop for the College Board® and edited or coedited the following resources; the Special Topics in Chemistry: Equilibrium, Special Topics in Chemistry: Thermodynamics, Special Topics in Chemistry: Acids and Bases, and Chemistry Curriculum Module: Guided Inquiry Activities for the Classroom. She has authored several books including Step by Step Chemistry, Practice Makes Perfect Chemistry, and several teachers’ guides and reading guides to accompany AP Textbooks. She has also been involved in writing questions for the ACS Chemistry Olympiad Exam and the ACS Advanced Exam.
Marian has served as a workshop leader for numerous workshops in the USA and internationally. She has helped students prepare for the AP Chem Test and has helped teachers sharpen their chemistry content knowledge and pedagogy. Marian is committed to helping teachers and students approach understanding chemistry and environmental science from a logical and conceptual viewpoint. She has developed a set of inexpensive laboratory experiments for teachers who are on a low or no science supply budget. For her contributions to science education she received the 2010 Presidential Award for Science
Teaching from President Barack Obama.
Course Description: This workshop is of interest to all science teachers. It focuses on active learning, guided inquiry in the classroom as well as lab, and the skills needed to prepare students to be successful in the AP and other rigorous science courses. Hands-on activities and examples will be used for all concepts.
All participants need to have closed-toe shoes for lab.
Resources will include ideas to cover concepts in STEM, STEAM, and NGSS
